Whisperings

To begin with, Franziska Baumann and Michel recorded their musical wanderings. They shaped these improvisations into a musical landscape, and then Bernard Trontin came in to overdub some drums. When this material had been further enriched with sounds from various sources, Michel made samples. They took the sampler, synthesisers, a piano, a Rhodes, vocals, a flute, effect processors, drums, a mobile studio with a skilful sound engineer, and guitars master-minded by Fred Frith, and they played at the Rote Fabrik for two delirious days. The outcome of all this was five hours of music on 24 tracks which we immediately nicknamed "l'omelette du curé" ("pot luck") because there was so much in it to feast on... both gourmet and less special fare. Then Michel spent 5 months with this material, listening to it, working it, sculpting it, re-organising it, adding Franziska's texts and songs and making it come alive to meet artistic requirements.
